PS-4: Nature-Based Solutions for sustainable water systems

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are emerging as powerful, cost-effective, and multifunctional tools for addressing water-related challenges while delivering co-benefits for biodiversity, climate mitigation, and community well-being. From restoring wetlands and protecting watersheds to implementing green infrastructure in urban areas, NbS offer holistic approaches that work with nature, rather than against it, to enhance the resilience and sustainability of water systems. Despite their potential, the integration of NbS into mainstream water policy and planning remains limited by gaps in financing, governance, and technical capacity. This session will explore successful models, challenges, and opportunities for scaling nature-based solutions in water management, especially in the context of climate change and water scarcity. Aligned with the CWW 2025 theme, this session will emphasize how NbS can drive climate resilience, reduce water risks, and support sustainable development, particularly when embedded in inclusive, multi-sectoral strategies. To advance understanding and application of nature-based solutions in water management by showcasing practical examples, enabling policies, and innovative approaches that strengthen climate resilience and ecosystem services. The session will foster cross-sectoral dialogue and identify pathways for mainstreaming NbS into water governance.
