Context:
The Mediterranean and EU regions face shared challenges in achieving water-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
A financially resilient water sector is critical to addressing these challenges.
Based on the 2017 UfM Ministerial Declaration on Water, the Water Agenda and Financial Strategy were endorsed in 2018.
Since 2019, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) has hosted annual conferences covering public–private partnerships, investment frameworks, climate resilience, the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus, and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services.
2025 Focus:
Present the newly endorsed UfM Recommendations on Water Finance.
Special emphasis on the role of domestic commercial banks, national public development banks, and international banking institutions in financing WASH and WEFE projects.
Align discussions with Cairo Water Week 2025.
Objectives:
Present and debate the UfM Recommendations on Water Finance.
Examine how banking institutions can support WASH and WEFE project financing.
Share insights and best practices from EU member states.
Explore EU support for Southern and Eastern Mediterranean implementation.
Integrate water finance into major international water dialogues and processes.
Target Audience:
100 in-person and 120 online participants, including high-level government officials, public agencies, regulators, water providers, users, financial institutions, researchers, academics, and international organizations.
