Improving the Resilience of Surface Water and Groundwater Basins in the Arab Region

This session, organized under the Water Scarcity Initiative (WSI), will showcase ongoing efforts to strengthen the resilience of surface water and groundwater basins in the Arab region. The discussion will focus on the development of a practical groundwater governance guideline, which will be tested in selected Arab countries through pilot applications. These pilots aim to promote aquifer management, enhance data and information systems, and establish local frameworks that support the sustainable use of groundwater resources. In complement, the session will also highlight advances in climate change policy planning and adaptation strategies, where basin-level impact assessments of both surface water and groundwater systems, drawing on RICCAR climate projections, are informing the design of Climate Resilience Packages. These packages integrate adaptation and mitigation measures with water accounting tools and provide policy guidance for embedding climate resilience into NAPs, NDCs, and other national planning processes.
