In this session, we will introduce the work of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in addressing these challenges. We'll present our innovative approaches for:
• Mapping Wastewater Resources: Assessing the quantity of wastewater generated and the valuable resources it contains, ready for reuse.
• Using AI and Remote Sensing: Identifying and characterizing wastewater treatment plants across the region to better understand the current landscape.
• Optimizing Water Allocation: Analyzing freshwater and wastewater swaps between cities and farms to find the most efficient and productive use of water resources.
• Assessing Health Risks: Evaluating the quality of water used by farmers as first step to ensure safer, more sustainable agricultural practices.
This work, conducted under the Water Scarcity Initiative, provides actionable insights for policymakers. We'll engage with experts from Egypt and Jordan to explore how these analyses can be integrated into national monitoring and planning efforts, promoting more and safer water reuse across the MENA region.
