Sustainable Inland Water Transport Development: history, future, challenges and opportunities

The “Establishment of a Navigation Line Between Lake Victoria and the Mediterranean Sea (VICMED)” Project is a PIDA PAP2 project coordinated by COMESA and championed by Egypt in the Presidential Infrastructure Championing Initiative (PICI)and comprises all Nile Basin countries. The VICMED Strategic Objectives are: • Achieve socio-economic integration and cohesion; • Achieve a sustainable integrated multimodal transport system; • Enhance trade and tourism; • Reduce poverty, among Nile basin footprint countries. Egypt developed the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) in May 2015 based on local governmental Fund. The “Feasibility Study Phase 1” (FS-1) was funded by AfDB through a grant of 650 000 US$. It has started on October 1, 2015 and ended in July 2019. This phase main deliverables were studies on: Institutional and Legal Framework for the project, Training Needs Assessment for footprint Countries and TOR for the feasibility study in addition to 2 Capacity building programs for foot print countries in the field of Inland Water Transport. The AfDB is currently supporting the Feasibility Study Phase 2 part 1 of the project with a 2 Million USD grant in order to establish the VICMED regional Operational Main Unit (OMU) and undertake a Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment Study (SESA)
